Hock’s Editing Services exists to provide high-quality services at affordable rates for authors, publishers, websites, and businesses. What started as a part-time hobby has turned into a full-time passion for me. I’ve been an avid reader for many years, and my undergraduate studies in computer engineering at Virginia Tech prepared me to focus on technicalities and to note discrepancies.
My philosophy of proofreading and editing is that the proofreader/editor should be hidden in the background. I’m not a ghostwriter, so I seek to avoid putting my personal preferences into the author’s story. What I will do, though, is provide feedback that will help ensure and improve the consistency, correctness, and strength of the author’s creation. I view my job as helping the author to bring out the best, most well-written story possible. In short, I view myself as a guide along the journey of creation.
I use Microsoft Word 2013 (compatible with older versions) to review and edit documents, using the Tracking and Comments features to offer transparency to the author. This allows the power over the final product to lie in the hands of the author. The author has the option—which I strongly encourage each author to exercise—to review every individual change and approve or reject it. I also provide ongoing support by answering any questions the author may have about the changes and suggestions I made or the reasoning behind them, even if it’s weeks or months after the project has been completed.
The process is fairly simple. I will gladly provide a sample edit or proofread of the first 1,500 words of your document. I’m also happy to provide references upon request. If you are interested in my services, feel free to e-mail me any questions you may have. If you decide to retain my services, 50 percent of the total project fee is due to reserve your spot in my work queue, and the remaining 50 percent of the total project fee is due after the project is completed and returned. (I use PayPal's invoicing feature, which allows you to pay with a PayPal account, debit card, or credit card; I also accept payment by Dwolla.) Please be aware that I have projects scheduled up to two months in advance, so if you’re interested in my services, please plan accordingly. I will be happy to provide you with an estimated completion date, but it is exactly that: an estimated date. I do my best to finish projects by the estimated completion dates, but sometimes things arise that may change completion time.
